António Villar de Souza

|
Born in Lisbon, in 1945, he is the third generation of a family of plastic artists. At an early age he revealed himself to be a sculptor/artist in pottery and clay, and also expressing himself as an artist in painting, drawing, photography, the graphic arts, comic strips and literature. However ceramics is the technique which most fascinates him. He put down his roots in the Province of Alentejo - Reguengos de Monsaraz - in 1982, and abandoned his career in creative advertising to dedicate himself exclusively to the arts. |
He founded the TEAR - Regional Association for Plastic Artists and Artisans - which he has presided over since it was founded and set up his atelier there, together with other associated artists. The Association has given both individual and collective exhibitions, in Portugal, Spain, Italy and Germany. |

According to António Villar de Souza, "each material has its own personality; one must penetrate its very essence so as to explore and adapt it to one’s own creativity." |

During various phases of his artistic life he has changed from clay to iron, from iron to copper, and then back to clay, then gone on to ceramic tiles (azulejos), then on to drawing, etc., in a constant search for new forms of expression, managing to take up his own evolution in each one of them, at the place where he left off. |
